History
-His parents were Tal-Vashoth, having found love in one another. But fearing the worst for themselves and their offspring, they decided to leave Metaari to be raised by an elderly human man that his father had had as a contact for many years.
-Unable to handle taking care of Metaari as he grew older, the old man sold him off to a passing mercenary band where he learned to hone his skills with a bow.
-Took up many missions during his time with the company. He soon became their most skilled marksman, and the leader's trusted second in command.
-Entering his 20s, a young dalish mage by the name of Shavera joined the company. Metaari fell for her hard and fast, and the two of them came to be inseparable. She was enough settle him down, to make him stop spending every evening at the closest tavern, with two or three people in his lap.
-During one mission, Metaari was horribly wounded, a templar nearly taking out his eye. While Shevara sat over him, trying to heal him back up, another took her from him. She died in his arms that night, and the templar found himself divested of his limbs which were tossed into the ocean.
-He spent weeks afterwards wallowing in his own self pity, until the leader of his company gave him an ultimatum: shape up, or get left behind. Not wanting to lose the only bit of family he had left, he pulled himself up and started giving it his all. Shevara would have never wanted him to continue as he was, after all.
-Was finally separated from his company around a year ago. They were separated in some forest in the Free Marches, where he happened upon a young Dalish man who gave him some assistance. They parted ways not long after, and Metaari has been on his own ever since.
Personality
As a young Qunari, Metaari was just as bold and brash as the rest of them; perhaps even more so. Born Vashoth and without the Qun to guide him, he had more freedom than most of the people in Thedas. He was a scant fourteen when he was first invited to take part in the parties that the big boys of the mercenary band he was in threw, and once he got a taste of that life he never wanted to go back. He was just as reckless in his personal life.
After Shavera's death, he became increasingly more subdued. He spent some time shying away from battle, from confrontation, and nearly lost his place with his company. And he would have, if it weren't for the leader. After a conversation with the man, Metaari's resolve steeled, and he finally grew up. He became more relaxed, more easy-going. Though he still enjoyed revelry as much as the next mercenary, he also knew when enough was enough, and how to read his body to know if he was even up for it in the first place. As he grew, he became more reliable, a better tactician, and eventually was given the task of leading his own small group within the band, where he really flourished.
Metaari is an incredibly progressive, forward thinking individual, and the decisions that he makes are hardly making him very many friends with those who'd rather keep things the way that they are. He sided with the mages, for example, bringing them on as allies rather than continue to keep them prisoner. He firmly believes that every person should be judged on the basis of their own character, rather than the hand that life has dealt them.
In matters of love, he's as intense with his passions as he is while fighting. It's all fire and heat and being about the moment. Well, at least with strangers. Things get terribly different when Metaari is with someone he genuinely likes. They have been few and far between in his life. With them, Metaari becomes quieter, gentler, more a lover than a toy. He becomes almost shy and uncertain, mostly because he can hardly believe that whomever he's with would stand to be around him enough to want to stay. And he would much rather his lover stay tucked in against him as they slept, rather than either of them taking off, or sleeping on opposite sides of the bed.
Spiritually, Metaari doesn't really believe in, well, anything. He has never been exposed to the Qun, beyond the bare minimum that most other people know. Nor does he necessarily believe in the Maker, which has earned him some sideways glances through his life. What he believes in is the physical, the present, the here. If the Maker decides some day to show up and announce his presence then, yes, he'll believe. Until then, Metaari will continue to believe in his bow and his friends.
Strengths & Weaknesses
Metaari is an incredibly skilled marksman, given he's been practicing his skills with a bow for the majority of his life. He's also pretty stealthy for someone so large, with fingers nimble enough to pick the most difficult of locks. His appearance is intimidating, which is useful on the battlefield. This leaves him a little hard to approach for some people, however, and his abilities with bladed weapons end at "the pointy end goes in the other guy".
While a capable tactician, Metaari isn't the most intelligent of Qunari. He knows next to nothing of history, nor does he care to. Never ask him to be an ambassador, either; he's bound to embarrass everyone.
His biggest downfall are his connections with people. He tries to distance himself, but give an inch he'll accidentally take a mile. The easiest way to get to him is to go through the people he cares for the most.
